Welcome to the 2008 Phoenix Con Games Painting competition! Below, you will find all the guidelines and rules on how to prepare your entry for the competition.
We are reducing the number of categories this year in order to increase the quality of the loot we are able to offer for the winners. P.s. the loot gremlins assure me that if we get a stupendous number of entries this year they will work extra hard during the off season to flood us with prizes for 2009, and they might just find something buried in the closest to sweeten this years pot.
As we seek to establish ConEvents as the rebirth of gaming it is only right that we strive for the best. This means establishing painting categories and standards that will challenge our attendees. As such, the judges will be looking for models that are well painted and well presented. Creativity will be rewarded, and we urge entrants to convey the aesthetics, the spirit, and the ethos of their creations.
As I promised last year: If you're the only one to enter then…YOU WIN! We did have some fierce competition in the single miniature fantasy and single miniature sci-fi categories BUT…some of the others were woefully barren. SO DON'T let this guy get all the loot again this year. So bring your best miniatures and go home a winner!
Painting
Painting the details of the miniature is good, adding additional detail to the miniature is amazing.
Number of Models
If you are entering a squad for the open competition please limit your selection of between 3 and 6 of your best and most individual models. This assists the judges in focusing their attention on the best you have to offer, instead of having them sift through 20 figures to find that one spot you missed.
Bases
Models must be mounted on an appropriate sized gaming base. The Judges reserve the right to move models that are not on appropriate bases into a category they deem more fitting. Putting your miniature on a black base is ok, putting your miniature on a base with detailed groundcover shows extra effort on your part.
Display Bases
Many people like to mount their models on large scenic display bases or plinths. This is permitted provided that the individual model can be removed and stand upon an appropriate sized gaming base. If the display base is integral to your model, it will only be eligible for the Open category (provided it meets all requirements of said category). Although a display base can add to the presentation of a unit, our judges do not take such bases into consideration when making their decisions. In fact, models on display bases are usually removed from the base when being judged.
Best of Show
all entries will be considered for the best of show award and just WAIT till you see the prize that accompanies this prestigious award. CONEVENTS STAFF ARE EXEMPT FROM BEST OF SHOW WINNER CONSIDERATION.
Category 1 - Modern Single Miniature
Any human-sized Modern miniature mounted on an appropriately sized gaming base. As a rule, if the model is supplied with a base 40-mm or smaller, it can be entered into this category. WINNER RECEIVES FREE ENTRY INTO PHOENIX CON GAMES 2009.
Category 2 - Modern Large Model or Vehicle
This category is for any single, large Modern model on an appropriately sized gaming base. Although most vehicles tend to not have bases, it is acceptable to mount the vehicle on a base appropriate to the model (no more than 20 mm larger than the vehicle itself).
Category 3 - Fantasy Single Miniature

Category 4 - Fantasy Large Model or Vehicle
This category is for any single, large fantasy model on an appropriately sized gaming base. Although most vehicles tend to not have bases, it is acceptable to mount the vehicle on a base appropriate to the model (no more than 20 mm larger than the vehicle itself).
Category 5 - Convention Special
The guys at Mythos Foundry and Crunch Waffle have done us the honor of sponsoring our painting area. They have even gone so far as to have our Guest of Honor, Michael Brand design a Phoenix themed miniature for each year of the convention. you can pick up the 2007 Phoenix for this year's 2008 competition and the winner of category five will receive a 2008 miniature.
Category 6 - Youth Competition
This category is reserved for painters 14 years and younger in age. The entry can be any single miniature.
Category 7 - The Open Competition
The Open Competition is your chance to let your imagination run wild! Anything goes! You can enter anything from a single model to a sweeping diorama. Remember, no matter how wild your entry, the judges will be looking for well-painted miniatures with character. Conversions are allowed but should adhere to the atmosphere of the game and spirit of the miniature.
The only restriction for this category is that the overall base size of your entry must not be larger than 18"x18"x18".
Category 8 - Speed Painting (timed not drugged)
Throughout the convention speed painting competitions will be held in our painting area, 11:00 15:00 and 17:00 Friday and Saturday. Anyone participating in speed painting events will then have an opportunity to enter their creation for judging in the Speed Painting Competition. WINNER RECEIVES FREE ENTRY INTO PHOENIX CON GAMES 2009.
Category 9 - Sculpting / Conversion Contest
Fancy yourself a master sculptor? Whether you're ready to go pro or not, consider entering ConEvents Sculpting/Conversion Contest. You entry should be unpainted so the judges can see what a masterful conversion you have accomplished, and there are some great prizes for the winners! Well pinned and jointed conversions are good, a seamless connection created through the use of green stuff is better.
There are a total of 234 Seats remaining in the 37 Events listed above...
